Staff Development
During the quiet summer period not everyone at NVIC was relaxing: several staff members participated in training courses.

Office staff completed courses in Access and in Time management. Azza Tahtawi, Shahdan Ibrahim, Ghaly Ayad Ghaly, Khaled Hussein Ahmed, Mouchir Mikhail Tawfiq and Hassan Fathi Abdel Meguid participated in a First Aid course. Now, there is always someone in the building available with basic First Aid knowledge. With so many guests and students this is very useful.

Moreover, Mouchir and Hassan participated in the seminar Defensive Driving, with the aim of raising awareness about the dangers of the Cairo traffic and how to ensure a safe trip for yourself and your passengers. The drivers of the Embassy of the Netherlands participated in this course as well. Of the whole group, Hassan achieved the best results! The NVIC congratulates all staff members on their achievements and hopes that their new skills will add to a more efficient and safer working environment for all.
PhD Peter Verkinderen
On 28 October 2009, our assistant director for Arabic and Islamic studies, Peter Verkinderen, successfully defended his PhD thesis "Tigris, Euphrates, Karun, Karkhe, Jarrahi. Tracking the traces of five rivers in Lower Iraq and Khuzistan in the Early Islamic Period".

Like Egypt, the study area is habitable only because of the presence of its rivers. The courses of the rivers in the Greater Mesopotamian Plain were not as stable as the Nile, however.

This research studies the information on the shifts in the river beds and the associated canal systems, which can be derived from medieval Arabic written sources, historical and topographical maps, European travellers’ accounts, and satellite images.
