Cleveringa Lecture and Workshop 2013: "Islam and Democracy: everything we already knew, should have known, and don't want to know" (17 November 2013)

On Sunday 17 November 2013, NVIC organised the Cleveringa lecture, which this year was read by Professor Maurits Berger from Leiden University, and was titled  “Islam and Democracy: everything we already knew, should have known and do not want to know.”

Lecture and Workshop

This lecture was preceded by a one day workshop entitled "Arabic and its Dialects: dialect in days of revolution." During the workshop, three speakers presented their papers: Hassanein Youniss, "Words of the Egyptian revolution: Sedatives or stimulants," Sayed Daifallah "Egyptian Colloquial in the Eyes of the Great 'Ammiyya Poets (Fu'ad Haddad, Salah Jahin, Abdel Rahman Al -Abnudi, and Sayyid Ahmad Fu'ad Nigm Higab)" and Masoud Shoman “Slogans of the revolutionary waves, and the collective self-awareness ".

In the afternoon Professor (em.) Manfred Woidich from the University of Amsterdam taught a three-hour master class on the Arabic dialects of Egypt. Our institute was happy to receive 35 interested participants during these workshop activities.

After a well attended lecture (by an estimated 100 invitees) by Professor Maurits Berger, the successful day was concluded with an equally well-attended reception on the roof of our institute. During this reception, visitors had the chance to enjoy an exhibition of Khiyamiyya objects.
